3. Auxiliary Verbs
The Verb that appears before the main verb in a sentence to modify its meaning.
Primary Auxiliary.
Capital Auxiliary (Model Verbs).

4. Primary Auxiliary Be Auxiliary:
To Create progressive tense and the passive voice or show state of being.
Am, Is, Are
Was, Were
Be, Being, Been

5. Primary Auxiliary Examples: He is pretending to be happy.
They were trying to call an Uber.
They are going to be playing tonight.

6. Primary Auxiliary Do Auxiliary:
To make question or negative form for the main verb. Do
Does
Did

7. Primary Auxiliary Examples and purposes:
He did look angry. (For Emphasis)
Do you work hard? (To Ask Question)
I didn’t like tonight’s show. (To make Negative)

He has studied arts since April. (Present Perfect)

10. Modal Verbs An auxiliary verb that expresses necessity or possibility.
Can – Could
May – Might
Must – Ought (to)
Shall – Should
Will – Would

11. Modal Verbs
Some Uses:
Might – used to show a possibility It might rain tomorrow.
May – A strong possibility It may rain tomorrow.
Must – An obligation It must rain tomorrow.

12. Modal Verbs Combined with Have Auxiliary:
He might have broken the glass.
They may have seen that movie.

13. Infinite Verbs
The infinitive form of a verb is the verb in its basic form.

14. Infinite Verbs As Nouns:
To dance was her passion. (The infinitive is the subject of was)
He likes to hunt. (The infinitive is the direct object of likes)

15. Infinite Verbs As Adjectives:
Give him an ornament to polish. (The infinitive modifies ornament)
I need a volunteer to take the minutes. (The infinitive modifies volunteer)

16. Infinite Verbs As Adverbs:
The officer returned to help. (The infinitive modifies the verb returned)
He will complete the mission to set an example. (The infinitive modifies the verb will complete)

17. Infinite Verbs Bare Infinitives (without to):
He should go home. (This is called a bare infinitive.)
Mark helped his friend finish. (The "special" verb is helped)

18. Gerunds The Form of verb which functions as a Noun.
All gerunds end in ‘ing’
swimming
running
drinking

19. Gerunds As Subject: Helping the homeless is satisfying.
Creating jobs made America great.
Investigating the facts won’t hurt.

20. Gerunds As Object: I like helping the homeless.
America was made great by creating jobs.
She tried investigating the facts.

21. Gerunds Gerund Phrases:
A gerund will often appear in a gerund phrase. A gerund phrase consists of a gerund, its object, and all modifiers.
Picking rotten apples from the floor is a great way to get stung by a wasp.

22. Gerunds Confusion with Present Participle:
Running the tap will clear the air pocket. (This is a gerund.)
Can you fix the running tap? (This is a present participle as an adjective.)
The tap was running for an hour. (This is a present participle used to form the past progressive tense.)
