Ancient Egyptians made great progress in the field of engineering.

3 Some facts 138 pyramids have been found in Egypt.
Pyramids are actually tombs for the pharaohs. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest. There are 2 million blocks used in its construction.

4 How were they built? Slaves were used for labor. A large ramp had to be built to carry the blocks to the top. When it was finished, the ramp had to be torn down.

Many pyramids had a smooth surface at one time that has crumbled with age. When they were new, they reflected the sun and looked heavenly.

10 The sphinx This huge sculpture of a lion with the head of a pharaoh guards the entrance to one of the pyramids.

The nose was shot off by Turks during the 15th century. It also had a fake beard at one time and was painted bright colors.

12 What do the Pyramids tell us about the Ancient Egyptians?
Egyptians were highly developed builders and engineers. Egyptians placed a big emphasis on the importance of their kings. Egyptians believed in the after-life.
