By Claire & Sulin.

2 The pyramids The Sphinx
Main facts The pyramids The Sphinx For over 3800 years The Great Pyramid Of Giza was the tallest man made structure in the world. Although it’s lost around 10 metres in height it still stands around 146 metres above the ground. Nearly all Egyptian Pyramids are located on the west bank of the Nile. With the head of a human and a lion's body, it has guarded the site of the pyramids for almost 4,500 years. The structure is made of Limestone. The Egyptians call him Abu El Hol.

3 The Great pyramids of giza
There are three main Pyramids here, which were built in the 4th Dynasty. The Pyramids of Ancient Egypt were built as tombs for Kings (and Queens). Today there are more than 93 Pyramids in Egypt, the most famous ones are the ones in Giza. The Great Pyramid is situated in Giza Necropolis, which stands bordering Cairo city of Egypt. The pyramids of Giza The features of the Great Pyramid of Giza are so large they are visible even from the Moon. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only remaining member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid - King's chamber, Queen's chamber and unfinished chamber. The unfinished chamber

5 The great sphinx Some people believe that there are hidden passageways or rooms underneath the Great Sphinx, but nothing has been found yet. The face of the Sphinx has been badly damaged over the centuries. Legend would have us believe that either the French used the Sphinx for target practice during the Napoleonic wars, or perhaps the British troops during WWI. The story goes that the nose of the Sphinx was shot off during this target practice. We know from photographs that the nose was missing long before WWI. There are also drawings made of the Sphinx, before the Napoleonic wars, which clearly show the Sphinx without a nose. The best theory that anyone can come up with is that it was badly damaged by the wind and sand, and just disintegrated.

6 The great sphinx The beginning of the story about the great Sphinx is written on a stele (Stone slabs that would stand upright in a temple or an important place) between the Sphinx’s paws. The story reads that one day, a young prince fell asleep next to the Great Sphinx. He had been hunting all day, and was very tired. He dreamt that the Great Sphinx promised that he would become the ruler of Upper and Lower Egypt if he cleared away the sand covering its body (the Great Sphinx was covered up to its neck). The rest of the story has gone. This stele was put up by the pharaoh Thutmosis IV who lived around 1400 B.C.
