1 Fossil Fuels Coal – Most abundant fossil fuel in the world.
Oil – Thick, black liquid Natural Gas – made under same conditions as oil but is a gas We can make synthetic fuels out of coal. This is NOT common. All are formed by decaying plants and animals over millions of years. This is a DISADVANTAGE because it is hard to replace them quickly if they run out. Coal from plants. Oil and Natural gas from decay of marine (ocean) organisms.

2 COAL Most abundant (common) fossil fuel in the world. Peat
Lignite- Soft Brown Coal Bituminous Anthracite – Hard, cleanest burning Plants decay >> Peat is formed >>Lignite>>>Bituminous>>Anathracite Most abundant (common) fossil fuel in the world. We can get it easily by strip-mining, but that is a disadvantage as it harms the environment.

3 How long do resources last?
Nonrenewable Used up faster than we can make them. Minerals Fossil Fuels Nuclear Energy – Energy released during fission (creates a radioactive waste, a big disadvantage.) Nonrenewable resources are usually more available and cheaper.

4 How long do resources last, continued.
Inexhaustible is something we will never run out of. The Sun Wind (not available in many areas) Water Power Geothermal Renewable is stuff we can replace in our lifetime. Alcohol, garbage, wood, biomass

5 Renewable Energy Geothermal – Energy from hot magma or hot, dry rocks
Hydroelectric – electricity made from water power and dams Biomass – Energy from burning wood, alcohol, trash Solar – Uses cells to collect energy from the sun or passive solar to heat things. Wind Energy – a lot of windmills making electricity

6 Mineral Resources Ores are valuable if people want them and if they can easily be gotten from the Earth. A mineral is an ore if it is in demand, easy to get, and worth something. Nonmetallic mineral resources include halite, granite, and gypsum. Metallic mineral resources include Hematite (for iron) Bauxite (for aluminum, but it is still cheaper uses fewer resources to recycle aluminum)
