3 Harassment Definition:
7/29/2014 Harassment Definition: Harassment includes any conduct (verbal, written, graphic, digital, or physical) relating to another student’s race, national origin, religion, color, disability, or gender that is sufficiently severe, pervasive, or persistent. Bullying can be harassment if it is directed at a person because of their actual or perceived membership in a protected class.

Repetition: Bullying behaviors happen more than once or have the potential to happen more than once. Talk about the types of harassment/bullying: verbal, physical, emotional, and cyber

6 7/29/2014 Talk with students about how everyone has the right to be valued for their individuality, including race, gender, culture and physical and intellectual differences. Tolerance of others is the key focus of this slide. Have students choose a partner and talk about the answer to each heading and how their answers show how they differ from one another..

7 7/29/2014 It is imperative students realize that bullying is not to be tolerated and they should not put up with it if it is happening to them or others. 1. Discuss how everyone has the right to feel safe and does not deserve to be bullied. 2. What should you do if you are bullied? (Brainstorm suggestions.) What might happen if you don’t do something about it? (Discuss with students that people who are bullying keep doing so until they are stopped. The first three picture show things students can do to try to stop being bullied. These things could be tried before getting help if the bullying is not too severe. Each is an example of assertive behavior, yet calm and rational. Discuss with the students. In picture 4, the student is asking an adult for help. Talk about the people they know who they could ask for help.

Patterns to watch for in your friends at school if they are being Harassed, Intimidated or Bullied MSD of Decatur Township 7/29/2014 Changes in eating habits Dropping grades Avoiding school, absent, tardiness or dislike of school Evidence of fights (Bruises/Cuts) Talk with students about why some of these things might occur if the student is being bullied or harassed. 9 7/29/2014 Why is it important to tell an adult about bullying? Why might it be difficult to do this? What could help make it easier? How could telling an adult help someone who is being bullied? What should you do if the adult can’t or won’t help? Discuss the statement “People who bully rely on keeping their behavior a secret.” Which adults would you tell if you were bullied? Why?

7/29/2014 How do I report an incident? You can report an incident of bullying or harassment on the District Website. (reports can also be made anonymously) Who can I contact to make a referral? You can tell the principal, Mrs. Anderson, your teacher, or any adult in the building. Click on the link and demonstrate to students how to find bullying/harassment reporting form.
