WHH (governor of Indiana Territory) has a meeting with Tecumseh 1810 Tecumseh refuses to give up Indian lands WHH warns him not to refuse Tecumseh travels to Creeks in the South to fight Harrison and his men. While Tecumseh is gone, WHH attacks the Shawnee tribe. Battle of Tippecanoe- Shawnees are slaughtered (women and children). The Prophet is also killed. Prophet is killed.

Some people were mad about the attack on the Shawnee. Some people were mad at the Shawnee having brought their destruction upon themselves.

The War Hawks pushed for war They wanted Britain to stop seizing our ships They were tired of the assistance to native tribes Jays treaty allowed for this to continue

William Henry Harrison was in charge of this campaign. He would kill Tecumseh at the Battle of the Thames and his brother (Prophet). Battle of Tippecanoe Andrew Jackson controlled the Gulf of Mexico and the Creek Indians

OHP “ We have met the enemy Sir, and they are ours!” He uses smaller ships to out-maneuver the larger British ships that were short on supplies. When OHP takes control of he Great Lakes Theatre, the British are cut off from the main land.

26 Jackson V the Creeks The Creeks took over a federal Fort Mims led by Chief Red Eagle. Jackson brings 2000 vols down from TN and slaughters Creek forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Women and Children are not spared. Treaty of Fort Jackson- forced Creeks to give up their land. Red Eagle signs the treaty. Jackson was operating on his own. A Partisan Force.

27 Partisan Forces Andrew Jackson led a partisan force of Tennessee Volunteers to GA to fight the Creek Nation. Do you foresee any problems with his force? What advantages will Jackson have? Why would Jackson take it upon himself to fight the Creek and then the British in New Orleans?

They send reinforcements to US The reinforcements break through defenses and burnt the Capital Building and the White House. Fort McHenry Stands (Baltimore, Maryland) September 13, 1814 Francis Scott Key- Star Spangled Banner 1931- becomes national anthem (ironically set to the drinking British tune)

29 Jackson At NO Jan 1815 AJ is helped by Jean Lafitte (lafeat) a well known pirate king. Lafitte is key in the decisive US victory Jackson is made a hero. British losses- 700 dead, 1400 wounded Jackson- 8 dead, 13 wounded\ Unfortunately, for the British, the war had already been ended by the Treaty of Ghent in December Neither side knew the war was over….
