1 Greek Mythology & Gods and Goddesses
The Odyssey

2 What is Greek Mythology?
The people of ancient Greece shared stories called myths about the gods, goddesses, and heroes they believed in. Each god or goddess was worshipped as a deity and ruled over a certain aspect of Greek life. Myths were created to explain the natural phenomena that could not be explained by science in the ancient world.

3 Why should we study Greek mythology?
Because it is still an important part of entertainment today. Modern plays, novels, television programs, movies and even advertisements refer to Greek gods, goddesses, heroes and their stories. Adventurous and exciting stories delight and entertain us. Ancient Greek culture has been kept alive by the oral and later written stories handed down through thousands of years.

4 How did the gods and goddesses come to rule?
The Titans were once in control of the world. Cronus, the father of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hera, and Hestia (future gods and goddesses), ruled for many years He ate his children because he was told that one day he would have a child that overthrew him Zeus tricked his father, escaped, and eventually overthrew Cronus and sent him to the underworld
