3 New Netherland (New York)
New Amsterdam = New York City Originally controlled by the Dutch Diverse colony: “Scots, English, Dutch, Germans, and Irish…Roman Catholic, Anglican (Church of England), Presbyterian, Jews, and Quakers…” Attraction to the colony: Religious toleration, economic opportunities (booming fur trade), and large land grants to farm.

4 New Netherland becomes New York
English (under Charles II) wants to take control of New Amsterdam (bustling port). Peter Stuyvesant (governor) is hated because of harsh laws and heavy taxes. No one will fight for Stuyvesant (colony is surrendered without a shot being fired).

5 Colony of PA Founded by a Quaker William Penn “a holy experiment”
Believed that all are equal in “God’s sight” Pacifists = will not serve in army Treated Natives with respect, offered to pay for land. Religious toleration Sent a pamphlet to Europe to encourage further settlement and it worked.

6 Middle Colonies Economy
“Breadbasket” fertile soil excellent for farming Skilled German crafts-workers set up in PA Natural Resources, timber and iron ore

7 “Backcountry” Where we live today is considered the backcountry (anything west of the Appalachian Mts). Thick forest, most items are made from wood. German gunsmiths developed a lightweight rifle (backcountry settlers known for their aim) Difficult time dealing with the Natives.
