1. Year 12 into 13 bridging work
You have all been working extremely hard on your independent investigation since returning from your AS examinations.
You should be clear about what is required for top level marks in each section of the coursework, I have attached the tick list and top band level descriptors if you are unsure. You also have a copy of the independent investigation guide for reference too.
You should be ready to submit a completed version of the independent investigation in your first geography lesson on our return in September.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Ms Blount on I will check my s as regularly as possible, but will be largely unavailable during the last week of July and first week of August.

2. Coursework Checklist Purpose (12 marks)
You have included at least 5 key points to show your background geographical knowledge of your study area (e.g the physical and human characteristics)
You have sourced every piece research
You have included at least 3 clear maps to show where your study area is located
Your maps each have a source, title, scale and north arrow
You have linked your question to geographical theory (ie the type of information you would find in a text book and online sources)
You have linked your question to at least 3 different, valid sources
You have compared your study area to another with similar characteristics/problems/management
You have included data from other sources to back up your points (e.g erosion rates, deprivation index data, fetch, costs)
Each piece of information is sourced
Your report has a clear aim, key question or hypothesis
You may have broken your question down into specific key questions (this is a good idea if you are not doing a hypothesis)
You have included a brief overview of how you are going to complete your coursework, which sections you will include etc.
Everything shows a very, very clear link to your overall coursework question.
You need to have completed everything on this checklist before submitting your work for marking.

3. Methodology and Data Collection (10 marks)
You have refereed to at least 3 methods of primary data collection
You have referred to at least 3 sources of secondary data collection
Every type of data collection links very closely to your coursework question. If it doesn’t, change the method!
You have explained in detail exactly how you will collect each type of data
You have said whether each type of data collection is stratified, systematic or random
You have said how much data you will collect (frequency and repetition), when you will collect it and referred to any collection methods requiring timing.
You have been specific on the timing of your data collection (time of day, date, season etc)
You have justified your choice of study sites, making clear reference to your question.
You have a detailed paragraph referring to the ethics of collecting accurate and fair data (see main investigation PPT if you are not sure on this)
You have provided information to show that the data collection was accurate and precise. You must be consistent.
You have made a clear point to explain why you think your data is as accurate as it can be (evaluation will come in later)
You have proved that you know what you’re doing!

Remember that your methodology should read as if you have not yet been out to collect your data

4. Data presentation, analysis, interpretation and evaluation of methodologies used (24 marks)
You have used at least 1 statistical test on your data to show the significance of your findings
You have used at least 4 different presentation methods
Every type of presentation is accurate and complete with scales, north arrows, titles, sources etc
You have made at least 3 connections in your presentation. Ie, you have linked environmental surveys to annotated photos and some form of graph. Or, you may have linked to stats result to photos, maps, graphs etc. Make links!
You have evaluated each method used
You have evaluated how well you think you followed the ethical dimension of your fieldwork (look back at your methodology for this)
You have evaluated whether you think you chose the right methods and if not, why not
You have suggested what other possible methods you could have used in hindsight
You have linked every piece of data presentation back to your original question to form a conclusion
You have used evidence (more than one piece of evidence per point) to back up your conclusive statements
You have clearly answered your overall question/aims/hypothesis, showing alternative answers too (how your evidence might show other answer)
Everything shows a very, very clear link to your overall coursework question.
You need to have completed everything on this checklist before submitting your work for marking.

5. Conclusion and Evaluation of the whole investigation (24 marks)
Your whole report is accurate, referenced and shows that you really do understand what you have written about.
You have linked the location of your study area into your methodology, analysis and conclusion
You have compared your study area to other locations of a similar background/characteristics at the start, middle and end of your report.
Your work is clearly communicated and makes frequent links back to the question
Once you have your data, you have backed up each point you have made with evidence.
You have questioned whether your conclusion would be any different if you had collected different data or changed your methodology (look at the other techniques available and see if there are other options you could have used)
You have evaluated whether you think you chose the right methods and if not, why not
You have suggested what other possible methods you could have used in hindsight
You have linked every piece of data presentation back to your original question (these are kind of like mini conclusions)
Your report is well organised throughout
You have used a wide range of key terms
Everything shows a very, very clear link to your overall coursework question from start to finish. You could even include text boxes titled: ‘how does this link to the question?’
