2 #1 Government—strictly controlled by the king, ruled by a royal governor (viceroy), The Spanish were not allowed to create their own self-gov’t. #2 Economy—Gold and silver, created encomiendas (cash-crop plantations), desired wealth #3 Interactions with Indians—Converted Indians to Catholicism, inter-married Indian women, conquered Indians, forced Indians to work as slaves on haciendas #4 Government—strictly controlled by the king, ruled by a royal governor, French colonists were not allowed to create their own self-government. #5 Economy—Fur trade and small-scale farming #6 Interactions with Indians—Converted Indians to Catholicism, traded fur (the French had the best relationship with Indians of any European country)
