This is a simple sentence. It tells what is happening. Often it starts with The or I or It when you write these sentences.
It is one idea.

A compound sentence is when it combines two ideas. The girl is holding an ice cream, and the balloons are floating away.

A compound sentence uses a comma or a conjunction to add the two ideas together. Conjunctions : and, but, or, nor
The dog runs, BUT the children play in the sand.
The girls play in the sand, AND the girl blows bubbles.

6. Complex Sentences
An idea (like a proper sentence with someone doing something) and some information that can’t stand alone (it isn’t a sentence by itself)
This is an INDEPENDENT clause (a complete sentence – can stand on its own) and a DEPENDENT clause (sentence fragment – cannot stand on its own)

7. The difference between compound and complex sentences- which is which?
The girl has her books on her lap, and the boy is carrying a backpack.
The girl has her books on her lap, although the boy has his in his backpack.
Although the boy has his things in his backpack, the girl has hers on her lap.
The boy is carrying his books, and the girl has hers on her lap.
The boy with glasses is carrying his books, but the girl has her books on her lap.

8. Complex sentence conjunctions
COMPLEX sentences have a complete sentence joined to a sentence fragment by a conjunction too.
Some words used in complex sentences:
After since
Although unless
As until
Because when
Even though while
If though

9. Make a complex sentence by adding a full sentence to a sentence fragment (try it also by putting the sentence fragment first and see how that sounds!)
