1 Higher Human Biology Memory Part 4

2 A starter for 10 ….. What is episodic memory? What is semantic memory?
Where are episodic and semantic memory stored? Where in the brain are procedural memories (skills) linked to? Emotional memories involve links between two parts of the brain. What are they? Where is spatial memory located?

3 Activity Using p244 and 245 of your text book complete the following:
Design a flow chart/diagram to summarise the different locations of memory Elaborate on your diagram by putting in personal examples to help encode the information you are learning

4 Semantic Memory Episodic Memory The memory of events and experiences
Recall of personal facts The record of facts and concepts Recall of general knowledge, non-personal facts and abstract ideas

5 Storage of Episodic and Semantic Memories
Episodic and semantic memories are stored in a region of the cerebral cortex called the temporal lobe This is where the sensory information was received and coded

6

7 Storage of Episodic and Semantic Memories
Episodic and semantic memory are stored in the region of the cortex where the sensory information was first received and encoded. Procedural memories (skills) are linked to the motor cortex. Emotional memories involve links between the cortex and the limbic system. Spatial memory is located in the limbic system.

8 Procedural Memories Contain information needed to perform
motor skills mental skills ‘How to’ information

9 Procedural skills are linked to the motor area of the cerebral cortex

10 Emotional Memories Are formed as a result of positive or negative associations with certain stimuli Involve links between the cerebral cortex and limbic system

11 Spatial Memories Hold information that can be recalled about a person’s environment and its spatial orientation E.g. the relationship of one object to another in a room Spatial memory is located in the limbic system in the hippocampus

12 What have you learned? What is episodic memory?
What is semantic memory? Where are episodic and semantic memory stored? Where in the brain are procedural memories (skills) linked to? Emotional memories involve links between two parts of the brain. What are they? Where is spatial memory located?

13 Activity Testing your knowledge Qs p246 No 5 Chapter 15 -16 Summary
