In the United States we have two major parties The Democratic Party – Founded in 1828 15 US Presidents The Republican Party – Founded in 1860 19 US Presidents Minor parties 28 registered minor parties in the US Including the Pirate Party!

Arose out of differences among Founding Fathers John Adams – 2nd President – Federalist Thomas Jefferson – 3rd President – Democrat-Republican Washington disapproved of parties

A party that holds power in government is called the Majority Party Controls Congress Controls White House A party that is not in power is called the Minority Party Can have limited power Can create balance against Majority Party

No viable third party options What if you are a conservative Democrat? A liberal Republican?
