1 Substances’ properties depend on their bonds.
Chapter 2, section 2.3 Substances’ properties depend on their bonds.

2 Metals have unique bonds
Metal atoms bond together by sharing their electrons. The atoms share electrons equally. Metallic Bond: The bond between metal atoms which the sharing of electrons allows the electrons to move easily among the atoms (a sea of electrons)

3 Properties of Metals Properties of metals are determined by their metallic bonds. Good conductors of electricity Good conductors of heat High melting points (takes a higher temperature for it to melt) Malleable (easily shaped) Ductile (easily stretched)

4 The properties of the compound depend on the chemical bonds.
Ionic: Solid at room temperature High melting and boiling points Hard, Brittle When dissolved, good conductors of electricity Covalent: Usually not solid at room temperature (liquid or gas) Low melting and boiling points Poor conductors of electricity

5 Bonds can make the same element look different.
Carbon: diamond, graphite, fullerine
