1 Daily Question 10/6/15 Do you think the world is overpopulated? Why or why not?

2 Population Lights

3 Introduction to Population

4 Population Growth It took until the year 1850 for the world to reach one billion people.

5 How much is one billion? The population of Chicago is 2.7 million.
If you had a million dollars in thousand dollar bills, it would be 4.3 inches tall. If you had a billion dollars in thousand dollar bills, it would be 358 feet tall! (~35 stories tall)

6 How much is one billion? It took you 11.6 days to be alive for a million seconds. It will take you 31.7 years to live for a billion seconds.

7 How much is one billion? In a supersonic airplane, you could travel one million miles in 31 days. It would take 85 years to travel one billion miles in that same airplane.

8 Population Growth In 2011, the population of the world reached 7 billion!

9 China and India China and India are both over 1 billion people.
China = 1.3 billion India = 1.2 billion India is growing faster than China. They should catch up by 2050.

10 World Clock

11 Population

12 Population Density People live on only ~10% of the Earth’s surface.
Why?

13 Most live in East or South Asia, Europe, and the Northeastern USA.

14 Why do people live in particular areas?
Moderate climates People prefer to live in places not too hot or not too cold.

15 Why do people live in particular areas?
Close to water

16 Why do people live in particular areas?
Proximity People stay close to where they came from

17 Why do people live in particular areas?
The Industrial Revolution (18th and 19th c.) Caused a population shift as people moved from rural to urban areas.

18 Urbanization The dramatic rise in the number of cities and the changes in lifestyle that result. There are now more people in cities than in rural areas.

19 Demographic Statistics
Population density The number of people living in a given area. U.S. = 83 per sq. mi. Bangladesh = 2,559 per sq. mi.

20 Demographic Statistics
Fertility rate the average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime. Niger = 7.68 U.S. = 2.06

21 Demographic Statistics
Rate of Natural Increase (RNI) Birth rate - Death rate Number of births or deaths per 1000 people in a year.

22 Demographic Transition Model

23 Stage 1: Slow Growth Population grew very slowly.
Many children born, but also many die. Most people are farmers. Growth pattern until the 1700s.

24 Stage 2: Rapid Growth: LDC
Hygiene and medical technology increases. Lots of babies being born and less are dying. Population increases dramatically in poor countries. Now reaching poor countries.

25 Stage 3: Slow Growth or No Growth: MDC
Population begins to level off. People have less kids as they become wealthier. Kids are no longer an asset. Immigration is often the only reason they see any growth. The U.S. is in Stage 3

26 Stage 4: Negative Growth: MDC
More people are dying than are being born. Sometimes incentives given for more children. Abortion sometimes illegal. Japan and most of Europe are in Stage 4

27 4 Minute History of the World

28 Overpopulation Carrying capacity
the number of people a region can support with minimal negative effects reached when resources available can no longer support the population.

29 Carrying Capacity Which has a larger carrying capacity?

30 Consumption of the World’s Resources

31 How do we avoid exceeding our carrying capacity?

32 Technology!
