Dual Enrollment Jones County High School

2 Most of Georgia Colleges and Universities participate in Dual Enrollment

3 APRIL 27th, 2018 This is the deadline for which any students interested in DE must have applied, submitted all documents, and been accepted to the college they are wanting to work with. At this point we can register for Summer or Fall courses.

4 Tests that are required to be admitted to the colleges:
ACT (Last Date to meet the deadline for dual enrollment April 14th test/March 9 registration) SAT (Last Date to meet the deadline for dual enrollment March 10th test/Feb 9th registration) Both of these tests have national dates of when they are given. JCHS is a testing site for both tests. Registration for both the ACT and SAT are done online. Accuplacer can be used at technical schools and schools with two-year degree programs. CGTC will be testing at the 9th grade on

5 Hybrid schedules can be done
A student can decide to take one dual enrollment class and classes at the high school at the same time. You must have 6 segments. Therefore, you can do 1 college class and at least 4 high school classes, or 2 college classes and 2 high school classes. If you are ready….full time college is 3 college classes. (you must meet all of the graduation requirements)

6 Courses on JCHS Campus We do offer several DE courses on the JCHS campus. This current year we taught the following: ENGL 1101/1102 via CGTC and MGSU HIST 2111/2112 via CGTC HIS 121/122 via GMC MATH 1111/1113 vai CGTC COFC 1030/1050/1080 via CGTC We hope and plan to maintain and grow these opportunities in the future.

7 Equivalent college classes
Most high school courses have an equivalent college course with a few exceptions: Algebra I, Geometry, and Ninth Grade Literature. These all require an EOC milestone as well. If you choose to take Biology at the college level in place of Biology at the high school level, you must still take the EOC milestone at the high school REMEMBER that you still must take all of the classes that are required to graduate

8 Senate Bill 2 Senate Bill 2 allows a student to earn a high school diploma once they have met the requirements of the 8 EOC courses (Algebra I, Geometry, 9th Lit, American Lit, Biology, Physical Science, US History and Economics) along with health and PE and completion of either: 2 approved technical certificates An approved technical school diploma An approved Associates Degree The above must be successfully completed before the high school diploma can be awarded.

9 To Know - Not ALL students are ready for Dual Enrollment. In addition to meeting the academic standards, the student must show that they are responsible, accountable, and self-motivated. The process needs to be carried mainly by the student, NOT by the parent. The student must be able to: Advocate for him or herself Meet deadlines (with the DE paperwork as well as the courses) Hold a conversation with a professor when needed Check regularly

10 NEW! This year we are adding a new component to our DE process - the Dual Enrollment Contract. We will review all points of the contract to be sure you understand and accept the terms of participating in Dual Enrollment

11 Dual Enrollment Contract – to be signed by both student and parent
You must maintain full time status through the college and/or high school classes. You have to take 6 segments (High school class = 1, College Class = 2) You are still required to meet all graduation requirements. Withdrawal from a DE class must be approved by your HS counselor. If you withdrawal after 10 days of high school classes start for the semester, you will receive a failing grade on your high school transcript. The grade will be recorded as a 69. Withdrawal prior to 10 days, you will be placed into a high school class.

12 Contract Continued Transferability of the classes you take in DE will be determined by the college receiving the credit. It is your responsibility to check with the college in which the credits will be transferred to determine if that class meets your needs for your particular goals. After you meet your graduation requirements, you will still be required to maintain full time status. This means that you will be taking classes that you will choose. It is your responsibility to research the college and career of your choice to make informed decisions about your class selection. Your class rank and the ability for you to become valedictorian and salutatorian will both be affected by all of the classes that you take including DE classes. All grades come to the high school as a letter grade which will be calculated on your high school transcript as follows: A=95, B=85, C=75, D=65, F=55 (these class will not have any added points)

13 Contract Continued It is your responsibility to maintain contact with your high school counselor to be kept up to date on important events, dates, etc. happening at the high school. It is also your responsibility to maintain contact with your respective club sponsor, coaches, or any person that is the point of contact for the extra curricular activities that your are involved with throughout high school. NCAA may or may not approve courses taken through a non-traditional format such as DE online. It is up to you to investigate NCAA regulations as they pertain to non-traditional courses. Students must have their own transportation to and from the college if taking the class on the college campus.

15 Closing Dual Enrollment is an awesome opportunity for a lot of students. However, it is not for everyone. When you decide you want to do DE, you are making a big commitment. It is not to be taken lightly or just to try. The grades you receive from DE will go on your high school transcript as well as your college transcript. When you ultimately go off to college after high school graduation, those grades on your college transcript will be there waiting for you.
