3 History The first Baron Baltimore was George Calvert
Founded by Cecilius Calvert (Lord Baltimore) Named the land for Queen Henrietta Maria March 25, Maryland Day

4 Government First proprietary colony
Cecilius Calvert made laws based on the landowners Legislative Assembly was created Two houses were included in the assembly

5 Economics The main way the colony sustained itself was TOBACCO
Slaves planted, harvested, cured, and packaged tobacco. Slaves were used to keep tobacco coming. Wheat and Corn were also important crops. Slaves began dying out as diseases spread causing the money to decrease BUT this did not end slavery

6 Demographics/Population
At its peak the Chesapeake colonies had over 110,000 european colonists These colonist came from Great Britain Most of the territory within the colonies is now present day virginia

7 Culture Taxpayers had to pay for the churches
First law to Grant Freedom Wealthy people ship their own crops to England They are well known for their fortunes

8 Religion The religion in Chesapeake are catholic
Most of their population are catholic Their religion are only common in some areas Cecilius Calvert wanted to grant religious freedom Cecilius Calvert known as Lord Baltimore

9 Native American Affairs
Many tribes lived in the vicinity of the Chesapeake colonies most of which spoke Algonquian No two tribes had the same culture each being individual in its own way The Colonist were not to friendly with the natives Ex: colonists tended to take their frustrations on the natives

10 Key People Nathaniel Bacon: the investigator of Bacon's Rebellion of Bacon was 29 years-old. Governor Berkeley: Berkeley's main focus was to encourage diversification of Virginia’s agricultural products. George Calvert: First lord baltimore. The father of Cecil Calvert (founder of Maryland.) John Smith: An English explorer, mainly helped early English colonists learn about the region. John Rolfe: an early English settlers of North America. Also came up with growing tobacco for the poor town.
