2 Resume Writing … Resume Types Chronological: Functional:
Work-related experience with most recent positions first. Preferred format by employers. Includes an executive summary (career summary) / objective above as a header. Functional: Focus upon key skills and experiences (not chronological work history) Recommended for new employees entering workforce or if applying for positions with very specific requirements.

Guidelines Notes Keep your resume brief and to the point. (1 page / 10 years) unless specified. Wow me in 1st ⅓ - ½ of the page Probable v. Possible ‘Meat’ = education and experience. Prioritize information according to its relevancy. Name should be the biggest item on the page Able to clearly read at arm’s length (14 font). Content = font size – use only 1-2 fonts only (bold, underline, italicize for highlights). Determine what comes first – degrees or education Which makes you more unique? Name, Credentials Contact info Executive Summary: 2 powerful sentences that describe you – use power words (e.g., highly-skilled, qualified, distinguished performance, outstanding success)

Title, company, location, (date) Use action words / sentence fragments – no need for complete sentences Begin each sentence fragment with a different action word (e.g., developed, implemented) -avoid repeating same action words. Be concise and specific. Avoid vague language (e.g., numerous, various, many) – does not convey professional image. Give statistics (numbers, $$, hours). Avoid extraneous information (e.g., hobbies, etc.) unless pertinent to the job. Focus on recent activities (past 4- 5 years) unless relevant to the position. Exercise Physiologist, Company xx, (2009 – present). Specialized in program development and implementation for 50 key accounts generating annual revenues of $450,000 annually (give stats….) Bachelor of Science – Exercise Physiology, San Diego State University, 2010. Emphasis in ……..

5 Resume Writing … Guidelines Notes Simple is better / cleaner
Use tab key (no space bar). Keep sections together – avoid splitting major sections between pages. 1” margin all way around. Spell check, edit, spell check, edit again. Never submit with typos. Use quality reproduction. Print your resume on a laser printer. Copy on quality paper: ≥ 20-lb. weight. Off-white, light gray or cream. Cite ‘references available upon request’ Include references on separate page. Names, addresses + contact information (phone numbers is best) ONLY when requested.

6 Your Turn … Look at your header (name, contact info). Develop your Executive Summary – hardest part. Experience or Education? What are your stats?
