2 PAR and 5C draft for BAN Kenichi Takizawa, Bin Zhen, Huan-Bang Li, and Ryuji Kohno National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT)

3 Contents Motivation Distinction with other WPAN standards
5C and PAR draft

4 Motivations To help IG-BAN come up with a clear identification (Distinction with other TGs, e.g., WPAN) To provide draft on 5C and PAR

5 5 Criteria 1. BROAD MARKET POTENTIAL 2. COMPATIBILITY
a) Broad sets of applicability b) Multiple vendors and numerous users c) Balanced costs 2. COMPATIBILITY 3. DISTINCT IDENTITY a) Substantially different from other IEEE 802 standards. b) One unique solution per problem (not two solutions to a problem). c) Easy for the document reader to select the relevant specification. 4. TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY a) Demonstrated system feasibility b) Proven technology, reasonable testing c) Confidence in reliability 5. ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY a) Known cost factors, reliable data b) Reasonable cost for performance c) Consideration of installation costs

6 PAR Main part of PAR Scope of proposed project
Purpose of proposed project

7 Distinction with others
other WPAN standards BAN Network Range ~ 30m < 2m Piconet set <255 nodes, multiple hops High number of nodes, single/multiple hops Configuration Self-configuration Low complexity MAC and network layer Power consumption Low power consumption Extremely low power consumption Node Battery Battery powered Energy scavenge/less-battery Topology Random and dynamic, Dynamic (e.g. body posture) location awareness Traffic Features Sporadic, modest/low data rate cyclic data , asymmetric traffic, modest/low (<2Mbps) real time data rate Requirements Low latency guaranteed QoS Overall goal Energy efficiency and self-operability Safe, limited electromagnetic exposure, energy efficiency

8 Draft on 5C (partial) 3. DISTINCT IDENTITY
a) Substantially different from other IEEE 802 standards. Body area network with low-invasiveness for human body, guaranteed QoS, low power consumption is currently not being pursued by any other wireless standards Task Group.

9 Draft on 5C (partial) 3. DISTINCT IDENTITY
b) One unique solution per problem (not two solutions to a problem). The proposed supplement will address a unique solution for body area network that enables short-range communication around human body market emerging such as continuous vital signal monitor, assistance to people with disabilities, body interaction, and entertainment, with paying attention to the safety for human body.

10 Draft on PAR (partial) 12. Scope of proposed project
This project will define a PHY and MAC for a data communication standard with low-invasiveness to human body, guaranteed QoS, low power consumption, location awareness, and robustness, within short range. 13. Purpose of proposed project To provide an international standard for body area network with paying attention to safety for human body, low power consumption, and guaranteed QoS for continuous vital signal monitor, assistance to people with disabilities, body interaction, and entertainment

11 Thank you for your attention !
