2 What is a verb? A verb can show or express action
All sentences contain a verb The lion roars. The lion runs. The lion sleeps.

3 Basic Verb Tenses You are all Time- Travelers! Past Present Future
(Then) (Now) (Later) I walked I walk I will walk

4 The Present Tense What is happening right now!
I eat a candy (right now). Jean doesn’t want to play (right now). The water is chilly (right now). Timmy is watching TV (right now).

5 The Past Tense - ED Everything that already happened!
I walk to the store : NOW – Present I walked to the store: EARLIER – Past - ED Jump – Jumped Talk – Talked Close – Closed

6 The Future Tense - WILL What will happen later on!
I eat this cheese cake - (Present) I will eat this cupcake - (Future) - WILL I pet a triceratops – I will pet a triceratops Jesse is going to go to Cuba this winter

7 Linking Verbs Also called “state of being” verbs

8 Modal Verbs Verbs that have special properties and help other verbs
What is modality? – It is when we use these verbs to express conditions on things For example: -Likelihood/Certainty -Ability -Permission -Requirement, need, obligation

9 Modal Verbs Things modals do:
May Might Must Can Could Shall Should Will Would Things modals do: -They agree to everything, they never change: I/You/She/He/We/They can do it -They don’t have a “to form”, no infinitives: NO to should, to may, to will, etc. -Indicate modality

10 Examples of Modal Verbs
Must: -The thief must have escaped by this window! (Likelihood) -Children under 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult in the amusement park (Obligation) May: -It may rain tomorrow (Possibility) -You may enter the room (Permission) Can: -I can hold my breath under water for 5 minutes (Ability) Should: -You shouldn’t go too fast on the highway (Advice)
