2. What is Propaganda
Propaganda techniques are the methods used to spread ideas that further a cause (political, commercial, religious, or civil)
Propaganda appeals to emotion, not intellect

3. Ad Hominem (Name calling)
Attacking the person, not the idea
To avoid supporting their own opinion, people will try and tear someone else down

4. Loaded words
Sometimes propagandists will appeal to the audience’s emotion by using words that have strong emotional connotations
Examples: home, freedom, slavery, traitor

5. Card stacking (omission)
This means that the propagandist stacks the cards in his favor.
Card stacking can be described as half- truths.
The speaker tells the truth but omits key words or ideas that may hurt his argument.

6. EITHER/OR FALLACY or False Dilemma
Only two choices are presented
The audience is given the false idea that they must choose between two options when more are actually possible

7. APPEAL TO EMOTION (Pathos)
The propagandist stirs up strong feelings (positive or negative), often connected to loaded words
Emotions can include fear, guilt, hate, pride, etc.

8. Ad nauseum
Repetition of a slogan

9. TESTIMONIAL
THE PROPAGANDIST “NAME DROPS” SOMEONE RESPECTED AND/OR FAMOUS

10. MISUSE OF STATISTICS
The propagandist uses numbers that may be misleading, either because they do not reveal the whole story or are incorrect

11. Transfer
The propagandist includes an object that the audience has an emotional response to and expects the audience to “transfer” that emotion to their cause/product
