1 Mrs. Burrell’s Class Classroom Newsletter April 23, 2018
Burrell’s Bits IEP season is upon us. I have been in touch with many of you and we have already had your child’s meeting. There are also some upcoming meetings. If I haven’t sent home an official IEP Invitation letter, I will be sending one home with your child soon. It is so hard to believe our year is almost over. Our time seems to be flying by. June 4th has been scheduled as a makeup day for January 17th. Schools were closed due to snow and ice. Each year the district has three additional days built into the school calendar for potential makeup days. June 4th was originally scheduled as a teacher workday. Please put this makeup day on your calendar. We are working hard on Text Dependent Analysis (TDA) in class. Your child should be practicing this when they are writing in their Reading Notebook. If they write about a favorite part or favorite character, they should be citing evidence from the text as to why that was their favorite part or why that character is their favorite. They know that any text that they copy, must be in quotation marks because these words were written by someone else. Please encourage your child to use Text Dependent Analysis in their Reading Notebook at least twice during the week. This will help prepare them for our State Testing. If you have any questions about TDA, please send in a note or get in touch with me. If your child doesn’t have his or her own Library Card, I encourage you to take them to your local Spartanburg County Library Branch and get them one. You will need to have your ID and proof of residence. Please see my contact information below. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns. I will get in touch with you as soon as possible. We are a team and we need to work together in order for your child to be the best student they can be. 2 What We’re Learning This Week Classroom Inspiration
Dates to Remember May 17th SC READY Math May 18th SC READY Social Studies Test May 23rd SC READY ELA Day 1 May 24th SC READY ELA Day 2 May 25th Field Day May 31st 5th Grade Awards Day What We’re Learning This Week Math: We are continuing to test daily our multiplication facts. My students have made so much improvement since we started our daily facts testing. Nine of my twelve students are working on their mixed facts tests. Many of them are scoring 90% or higher daily. I am so proud of them! ELA: We are working on our improving our reading fluency. We want to read with expression and hear excitement when we are reading. Students have also been working on Text Dependent Analysis. They are working on finding evidence for their answer in the text. Students should be writing longer, more detailed sentences in their Reading Notebooks. Other Information Here Please know that the safety of your child is my number one concern. We talk about making safe choices here at school. Students are not allowed to open any outside door for anyone-even if it is you. We have practice drills monthly for different types of emergencies. We talk about what to do if they are not with us and there is an emergency. The number one rule to remember is to remain calm. If we remain calm, we can remember what we have practiced. Please make sure your child is getting enough sleep. We have had some tired students this past week. We will make sure that everyone has had breakfast before our day begins. If your child doesn’t return homework (including Home Note and Reading Log signed) or finish classwork, they will need to complete it before they can have Friday Fun. Please send in a daily snack for your child. We go to lunch at 12:05 and that is a long time between breakfast and lunch. Friendly reminder about snacks: Please do not send in any sweets for snack-they are not appropriate. Peanut butter crackers, pretzels, fruit, nuts, cheese, or popcorn all great ideas for healthy snacks. Please make sure your child is wearing tennis shoes on the days they go to PE. Please see our daily schedule on the front page. We go to PE twice each week. Classroom Inspiration “Never lose sight of the fact that the most important yardstick of your success will be how you treat other people-your family, friends, and co-workers, and even strangers you meet along the way.” Former First Lady Barbara Bush
