SHS SENIORS: CLASS OF 2013 Graduation here we come!

2 GIFT & Safford Academy:
Requires paperwork filed with: Mrs. Rios or Mrs. Barlow (gift) Mrs. Onorato (academy) We need proof of registration from EAC to put those classes on your schedule and to give you dual credit. Check with Guidance Office if you’re not sure if we have this for you. You must report any withdrawals to Mrs. Barlow/Mrs. Rios/Mrs. Onorato/Mrs. Robbins If you don’t, your grade at SHS may reflect an “F”. Deadline to withdraw is November 2nd to receive a “W” not an “F”

3 Graduation Requirements for SHS: Total = 24 credits
English – 4 credits (Eng 9, 10, 11, &12) Math – 4 credits (Algebra, Geometry, and two more) Science – 3 credits (Biological & Physical and one more) Social Studies – 3 credits (World Geo./History, American History, Gov’t & Economics) PE – 1 credit (dance is not a PE) Vocational/FineArt – 1 credit Electives – 8 credits

4 Entrance Requirements for AZ Universities:
English – 4 units Math – 4 units (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, and Advanced Math) Lab Science – 3 units (Physical Science, Biology, Biology 2, Chemistry, Chemistry II, Physics, Human Anatomy) Social Studies – 2 units Foreign Language – 2 units (two years of high school foreign language or two semesters of college foreign language) Fine Art – 1 unit (at SHS this would be Band, Choir, Dance, Art I or Art II – one year at the high school level or one semester at the college level)

5 AZ College Entrance Requirements (continued):
Top 25% of class rank OR ACT Score of 22 or better SAT Score of 1040 or better 3.00 GPA in the 16 core competency courses

6 NCAA Student athletes must register if they want to attend a Division I or Division II college or university. Talk to your SHS counselor See coaches for rules governing campus visits, recruiting, etc.

7 Computing your GPA For an “A” you get 4 points
For a “B” you get 3 points For a “C” you get 2 points For a “D” you get 1 point For an “F” you get NO points Add all points together and divide by the number of classes taken. Add weighted credit to this number to get WGPA and rank Grade must be a “C” or higher to even get weighted credit

8 GPA: for example X 3pts = 3 Eng 12 – B Alg 3 – B X 4pts = 4
Total = 23 pts./7 classes = 3.285 Eng 12 – B Alg 3 – B Economics – A Chem 2 – C Culinary Arts – A Sport Cond. – A Bus In Act – B

9 TIMELINE Towards Graduation:
Attend Financial Aid Workshop College Fair at EAC TAKE THE ACT OR SAT!!!!!!!! Apply to Colleges and/or Universities Apply for Scholarships Most deadlines are April 1st if not sooner! Visit Colleges and Universities Make Final Decision

Registration and Testing Dates are located in the Guidance Office Required for some major scholarships Take the ACT Assessment ONLY $35.00 $50.50 With Writing (if going to AZ 4-year public university don’t need the writing)

12 College Funding: Where’s the money?!
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Early consideration deadline is January 1, 2011 Even if you don’t think you qualify, many scholarship & loans require a FAFSA application Scholarships See the next slide  Military Service Loans This is your LAST resort; NOT recommended!

13 Scholarship Opportunities:
Check the Senior Scholarship Bulletin Comes out in September Posted in Senior Hall, Counselor’s Office, all Government classes, and on-line Constantly updated as new scholarships come in Listen to daily announcements, too! Check out (great resource) Go to the Financial Aid webpage of the college you are planning on atteniding They will have scholarships listed specifically for their students

14 AZ High Honors Tuition Scholarship
Requirements are VERY strict Students must complete all 16 Core Competency Courses by graduation with a B* or better Student must have a core GPA of 3.50 in the 16 CORE COMPETENCY COURSES OR be ranked in the top 5% of graduating class Student must EXCEED standards on all 3 of the AIMS Tests by the end of junior year. If only 2 out of 3, then you must also pass 2 AP exams with a 3 or better.
