EARTH’S LAYERS ARIZONA STATE SCIENCE STANDARDS: GRADE LEVEL 7 Strand 6: Earth and Space Science Concept 2: Earth’s Processes and Systems Understand the processes acting on the Earth and their interaction with the Earth systems. PO 3. Analyze the evidence that lithospheric plate movements occur. PO 4. Explain lithospheric plate movement as a result of convection.

Students will be able to recognize and name layers of the Earth
EARTH’S LAYERS DAILY OBJECTIVE: Students will be able to recognize and name layers of the Earth
3
TWO TYPES OF EVIDENCE: Collecting data by measuring seismic waves created by earthquakes from around the world.
4
TWO TYPES OF EVIDENCE: Collecting data by examining rock samples driven to the surface of the Earth.
5
Layers of the earth: Crust
Layer of rock that form Earth’s outer skin Thinnest layer of Earth, and least dense Includes land forms, soil, water, all life on earth
6
Types of Crust Oceanic: All of the ocean floors
Continental: Includes all continents and islands
7
Layers of the earth: MANTLE
Layer of hot, solid rock just below the Earth’s crust Thickest layer of Earth, and more dense than the crust Two kinds: Lithosphere Asthenosphere
8
Types of Mantle Lithosphere
Rigid layer of the upper most part of the mantle and lower part of the crust Made up of large and small slabs of tectonic plates
9
Types of Mantle Asthenosphere Under the lithosphere
Softer and hotter rock is located here Flows slowly like hot tar
10
Layers of the earth: outer core
Composed of liquid iron and nickel Temperature, pressure, and density here are lower than in the inner core; that is why this layer is a liquid
11
Layers of the earth: Inner core
Solid layer of nickel and iron Highest temperature, pressure, and density
12
Layers of the earth: video
Core of the Earth Video
