Layers of the Earth part 2 (physical properties)

RAP: All from layers of Earth part 1 1.The Earth is divided into three layers called _____ _______ and ______ 2. _____Layer between the crust and core 3. ______ Center of the Earth

Key Questions: 1.What is the lithosphere? 2.What is the asthenosphere? 3.What is the mesosphere? 4.What is the outer core? 5.What is the inner core? 6. What is the Moho?

1. What is the lithosphere? Made up of crust and uppermost layer of the mantle. Broken into pieces (tectonic plates) which move around on the asthenosphere.

2. What is the asthenosphere? Upper part of the mantle. Soft, weak, hot rock (magma) Tectonic plates float on

3. What is the mesosphere? Lower mantle. Solid and rigid moves slowly

4. What is the outer core? LIQUID iron and nickel Creates Earth’s magnetic field which protects us from solar radiation

5. What is the inner core? Solid iron and nickel Highest temperature, pressure, and density Solid due to extreme pressure bearing down.

6. What is the Moho? Boundary between the crust and the mantle that is more dense than the crust.
