2 Abolitionist Movement
Most abolitionists wanted to end slavery immediately. Abolitionists believed that slavery was morally wrong, cruel and inhumane, and a violation of the principles of democracy.

3 Harriett Tubman Was a slave in Maryland
Most famous conductor on the Underground Railroad Harriet Tubman led hundreds of enslaved African Americans to freedom She was called “Moses” after the Biblical leader

4 William Lloyd Garrison
William Lloyd Garrison wrote The Liberator and worked for the immediate emancipation of all enslaved African Americans.

5 Frederick Douglas Former slave
Frederick Douglass wrote The North Star and worked for the rights to better the lives of African Americans and women.

6 Suffrage Movement Suffrage means the right to vote
Supporters believed women were deprived of basic rights, such as the right to vote, educational opportunities (especially higher education), equal opportunities in business, and limited in rights to own property.

7 Sojourner Truth Original name was Isabella Van Wagener
Born into slavery in New York Traveled through Long Island and Connecticut preaching about salvation Worked with Frederick Douglas and William Lloyd Garrison In 1850, she joined the women’s suffrage movement

8 Susan B. Anthony Susan B. Anthony was an advocate to gain voting rights for women and equal rights for all.

9 Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Stanton and her friend, Lucretia Mott, wanted to attend and anti-slavery meeting in London Some of the delegates were not recognized because they were women In 1848, Stanton and Mott organized a conference for women’s rights It was called the Seneca Falls Convention

“All men and women are created equal” Women are upset because they can’t vote Women had no say in the creation of laws Women are not allowed to go to college
