1 The Breastplate of Righteousness Ephesians 6:14b
The Whole Armor of God Series on Ephesians 6:10-20 Grace Community Church May 11, 2008

2 Ephesians 6:13-14 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness,

3 What does Paul mean by “righteousness”?
Self-Righteousness? Christ’s Imputed Righteousness? Practical Righteousness or Holiness?

4 Practical Righteousness
Romans 6:13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

5 Righteousness Is Commanded
1 Timothy 6:11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 2 Timothy 2:22 So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 1 Peter 1: but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

6 1 John 3:9-10 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

7 Enemy’s Tactics by Thomas Brooks
Presents sin as bait: all the benefit and none of the consequences… Presents sin as virtue… Emphasizing the smallness of the “degree” of sin… Presents best men’s sin and hides their virtue. Presents God as ALL mercy… Presents repentance as easy… “I will repent later.” By making the soul bold to venture upon occasion to sin. Presenting the outward pleasure of those enjoying sin’s pleasure without consequence. Presenting the miseries and crosses born by those who are obedient. Causing us to compare ourselves to others. At least I am not like him… Polluting the soul with errors that lead to sin. Leading men to choose wicked company.

8 Ephesians 6:14 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, Put on Christ Love Righteousness Hate and Fear Sin – 1 Thess. 5:22 & Jude 23 Keep your Belt on – 2 Tim 3:16 & Psalm 119
