4 Vocabulary Biome = one of earths large ecosystems each with its own type of climate. Desert = a sandy, rocky, biome with little precipitation, and little plant life. Tundra = a large treeless plain in the artic regions where the ground is frozen all year. Taiga = a cool forest biome of conifers, in the upper Northern Hemisphere. Tropical Rainforest = a hot, humid biome near the equator, with much rainfall, and a wide variety of life.

5 Vocabulary ( continued)
Temperate forest = a biome with a lot of rain and a cool climate. Deciduous forest = a forest biome with many kinds of trees that lose their leaves each autumn. Grassland = a biome where grasses, not trees, are the main part of life.

6 Ls. 3 What are Biomes Deserts are treeless and extremely dry biomes
Desert soil is often rich in minerals but poor in animal and plant decay. Plants and animals need special adaptations to survive in dry deserts.(Ex. Cactus store water in their stems and branches Only a few animals stay awake in the suns heat Most desert animals are active at night

7 What are Harsh Biomes The tundra is a large treeless biome where the ground is frozen all year. In the short summer the tundra stays light almost all day and temperatures rise above freezing Very few animals have adapted to living in the tundra The taiga is the worlds largest biome Unlike the tundra the taiga is full of coniferous evergreen trees The taiga has a longer growing season than the tundra Many taiga animals have thick layers of fat that protect against the cold Many hibernate to avoid the coldest winter months

8 What are Some Other Forest Biomes
Forest Floor is a home to many insects , Frogs, and Mice Canopy is thick with plant life Emergent Layer is the highest layer Epiphytes can be lichens or plants, such as mosses and some ferns, that grow on trees

9 What are grasslands African grassland is called savannah
Temperate grasslands has cold winters and hot summers Grassland are wetter than deserts Grassland soil is rich with nutrients Fires are common in the biome Grassland are producers of the ecosystem 25% of the earth is grassland
