DEFINITION OF RIVER A river is fresh water constantly flowing across the surface of the land, usually to the sea. It flows in a channel. The bottom of the channel is called the bed and the sides of the channel are called the banks.

Rivers are constantly changing and altering the landscape
Rivers are constantly changing and altering the landscape. They do it by 3different processes: EROSION: The action of removing material - rocks, soil, vegetation - from the bed and banks of the river. TRANSPORTATION: The flowing water transports or moves the eroded material. DEPOSITION : When the flow of water is too slow or not enough to move the eroded material, the material is deposited or dropped. The deposited material is called sediment.

MIDDLE COURSE LOWER COURSE UPPER COURSE
A river usually begins on a mountain or hill. Because of the height, the flow is turbulent, so we can find rapids and waterfalls. Erosion is produced. MIDDLE COURSE The flow has less energy. It carries a finer load (sand and mud). We can find meanders or curves from side to side. LOWER COURSE The river flows near to the level of the sea. We can find very gentle valley sides, very big meanders and a wide flood plain.
