September 2014 Lesson on: Different fluvial landforms Key term: 1.Fluvial 2.Fluvial landform Key question: 1.What are the different fluvial landforms? Dwight Sutherland 2014

Which of these is a fluvial landform? Give a reason for your answer. Confluence River Trent River cliff Attenborough Nature Reserve Dwight Sutherland 2014

Different fluvial Landforms and their descriptions 1.Gorge - A steep side slope with a river valley. 2.Ridges – A narrow elongated stretch of land at top of a river cliff. 3.V-shape valley - A narrow river valley where the two sides slope up at an angle in the form a V shape. 4.Waterfall – A steep drop in the river bed where water fall down. 5.U-shape valley - A river valley where the two sides slope up at a 90° angle in the form a U shape. 6.Meanders – Large bends in the river. 7.River cliffs – A steep drop along the river bank. 8.River beaches – A build up of sediments along the banks of a river. 9.Oxbow lakes – An enclosed body of water situated next to a river channel. 10.Braided channels – A large river channel which has divided up into several smaller channels. 11.Flood plain – A flat area of land next to a river channel that is usually flooded after heavy rainfall. 12.Alluvial plain – A flat area of land near the mouth of the river where eroded material are deposited building up fertile soil. 13.Delta - A narrow elongated stretch of land build up of mud and sediments by the river into the sea. 14.Interlocking spurs Dwight Sutherland 2014

TASK: Study the pictures/satellite images closely. Name each fluvial landform shown using the definitions from the previous slide. Give a reason for your choice. Dwight Sutherland 2014

TASK: Study the OS maps of the rivers below. Identify some fluvial landforms along the river by giving the 6 figure grid references of their location. Give a reason for your choice. Dwight Sutherland 2014 River Crouch OS map 175River Frome OS map OL15

Lesson summary TASK: Where do we find different fluvial landforms, upper, middle or lower course? Write upper, middle of lower course beside each landform below. 1.Oxbow lakes – An enclosed body of water situated next to a river channel. 2.Ridges – A narrow elongated stretch of land at top of a river cliff. 3.Delta - A narrow elongated stretch of land build up of mud and sediments by the river into the sea. 4.V-shape valley - A narrow river valley where the two sides slope up at an angle in the form a V shape. 5.River cliffs – A steep drop along the river bank. 6.Alluvial plain – A flat area of land near the mouth of the river where eroded material are deposited building up fertile soil. 7.Waterfall – A steep drop in the river bed where water fall down. 8.U-shape valley - A river valley where the two sides slope up at a 90° angle in the form a U shape. 9.Braided channels – A large river channel which has divided up into several smaller channels. 10.Meanders – Large bends in the river. 11.River beaches – A build up of sediments along the banks of a river. 12.Gorge - A steep side slope with a river valley. 13.Flood plain – A flat area of land next to a river channel that is usually flooded after heavy rainfall.
