2 Discussion Points for today | 8-7-2017
Future funding status/support from ASHA Stanford to Sarva Vidya Trust (SVT) Request for Project Stewardship going forward

3 Program Overview Sarva Vidya Trust administers a Two Year Nursing Assistance program for girls in nearby villages with no financial resources available. These students have cleared the 12th Standard – but not with very high marks and typically end up as minimum wage workers in shoe/garment factories in the area. This program trains students to be Nursing Assistants and works with about 30 hospitals in Chennai where the students are generally placed. Currently, program has 38 students in the first year (new enrollments) and 30 in the second year.

4 Program | Success Metrics
>100 of the graduates of the program, since it’s inception in 2009, have been successful in getting a job as a nursing assistant at a local hospital. Feedback from local hospitals about the SVT graduates has been excellent (as communicated both to Mrs. Thenmozhi and the teachers during their hospital visits) Students from the village where they have alumni come forward voluntarily to join the program.

5 Program Challenges Sudden urban city exposure for girls from villages causing social adjustment issues (low self esteem, inability to cope with change, going astray, mobile/ tech exposure). Various self-help groups and counseling efforts underway. Constraints in further expansion, unable to do so due to lack of qualified/ able staff (like Mrs. T). Student attrition – due to social pressure on the girls (marriage, language barriers (local medium of instruction Tamil vs exam in English, other parental pressure). Current drop outs 10 out of approx. 60 students.

6 Site Visit 2016 | Excerpts Alternate sources of funds: Regular committed donors exist. They would welcome connections to other Asha chapters and orgs like Vibha. VH working on connecting them. They are inspired to build the program to 500 students but lack funds and also staff with skills to handle the expansion Facility: RK mutt is giving them their space and have started charging a nominal rent. This may become formal especially as the program grows Structured counseling: They want to have that but it requires a bigger outlay Projector & Tools: The one bought by Asha is defunct. The skeleton and dummy body they use to teach anatomy is broken. They dummy body needs to be replaced. Again both were bought with funds from Asha Stanford Student feedback: The girls said they were happy to be away from the village learning and doing new things. One girl said this is an opportunity she would have never had otherwise. Her hope is to earn money so that her father need not feel the pressure alone.
