1 GRAMMAR #2 AGREEMENT

2 SUBJECT/VERB AGREEMENT

3 WHAT to PAY ATTENTION TO
 Number Compound Subjects Either/Or and Neither/Nor Collectives  Gap between the subject and verb  Inverted Sentences

4 NUMBER-general A subject, whether plural or singular, needs a verb to match The commuters take the train to work every morning. Bill takes the train to work every morning. The baseball fans cheer wildly whenever a player hits a home run. The baseball fan cheers wildly whenever his favorite player takes the plate.

5 NUMBER, pronouns Singular pronouns: each, someone, something, everybody, etc. Each of these hot dogs is juicy. Everybody knows Mr. Jones.

6 COMPOUND SUBJECTS When a subject is compound (joined by “and”), use a plural verb. The dog and the cat share a food bowl. New to the area, the doctor and her child hope to settle into their home soon.

7 EITHER/OR…NEITHER/NOR
When subjects are joined by OR, NOR, EITHER/OR or NEITHER/NOR, look at the subject closest to the verb to determine which verb form to use. My aunt or my uncle is arriving by train today. Neither the plate nor the serving bowl belongs on that shelf. Either the doctors or the pharmacists are qualified to work with medicine.

8 COLLECTIVE NOUNS emphasized?
Collective nouns are tricky; is the individual or group being emphasized? A majority of the committee have signed their names to the report. (group) A number of fans attend games with jerseys, hats, pennants, and rally towels. (group) The number of fans who cheer on the team grows with each win. (group) Five dollars is a lot of money. (single amount of money) Macaroni and cheese is my niece’s favorite meal. (it’s a single dish)

9 GAPS BETWEEN THE SUBJECT AND VERB
When you find your subject to determine the verb, don’t let the stuff in between them get in your way! Excitement, as well as nervousness, is the cause of her shaking. The politician, along with the newsmen, is expected shortly. The superheroes, in addition to the police officer, are fighting crime.

10 INVERTED SENTENCES Sometimes a subject comes after the verb. It may be helpful to re-write the sentence in your head so that it begins with the verb. There (is, are) four hurdles to jump. Four hurdles ARE there to jump. There (is, are) a high hurdle to jump. A high hurdle IS there to jump. Here (is, are) the keys. The keys ARE here.
