1 The Perfect Society: Anticipation Agree/Disagree
In an ideal society, everyone is equal. Rules exist to help us live our lives properly. The police should be allowed to do whatever they can to protect the community. You shouldn’t have to be around people that you don’t agree with. It is alright to upset some people as long as you’re doing what is best for society. The government knows what is best for us. It is better to be ignorant and happy than to be aware and upset.

3 Sociology – In the Beginning…
In the 1800’s social scientists began looking at society in a scientific way instead of a philosophical one The onset of industrialization caused rapid social change Example: The increase of factories in the Industrial Revolution led to the shift from an agrarian to urban lifestyle

5 Structural Functionalism
Each society should provide members with basic system requirements These basic requirements include air, water, food, shelter, etc. These requirements serve to: a) Satisfy material needs b) Socialize and educate the young c) Co-ordinate overall needs (through institutions)

6 Neo-Marxism Based on Karl Marx’s idea that economic power leads to political power, which is the key to understanding a society Power also gives influence Not all can have this power in a capitalist society: These contribute to class conflict Discussion Question: Are we always in competition with one another? If so, how are you competing with others right now?

7 Symbolic Interaction We have socially constructed understandings of specific symbols that we rely on based on instinct These symbols offer meaning to the experiences of everyday life and informs how we interact with others within society
