What does it mean to exhibit professionalism as a new college graduate? Recent research suggests current college graduates do not exhibit as much professionalism as their Ers expect Suggested that college preparation needs to reinforce ‘soft skills’ such as honoring workplace etiquette and having a positive demeanor Traits or behaviors characteristic of professional Ees include personal interaction skills, including courtesy and respect; ability to communicate, which includes grammar and listening skills; a work ethic which includes being motivated and working on a task until it is complete; and appearance (involves attire, tattoos, and piercings) Ers value, and believe recent graduates most deficient re: accepting personal responsibility for decisions and actions, ability to act independently, having clear sense of direction and purpose Source: York College of Pennsylvania research, reported in InsideHigherEd.com, 10/23/09
