2 Communication Signals
Communication signals are designed to: Increase or Decrease Distance Both Dogs and Cats communicate through: Facial expression Tail, ears, eyes, and mouth Vocalizations Body postures Rate of respiration Speed and direction of movement Tension in muscles When first learning to read body language it is helpful to identify and focus on key body parts -Distance decreasing behaviors are expressed to invite dogs, humans, or other animals to come closer without worry of attack -Distance increasing behaviors are expressed to signal that an interaction has become too intense or prolonged for the animals’ own comfort level. These signals are used to let other dogs, humans, or other animals that they should back off, or end the interaction—they can serve as a warning. -the combination can indicate emotional state, stress level, intention, social status Pictures:

Stop all movement Avert eye contact immediately Turn sideways to dog Cross or lower arms Move slowly Get distance or put something between you and dog if you can Toss Treats Use “natural resources” to distract or scare (Whatever is around you to use as a barrier or make noise)

6 Helpful Tools for Handling Dogs
Voice – low, calm Your body posture & communication Towels and/or blankets Treats Kennel Knowing proper leash techniques for the dogs at the shelter.

7 Things to Remember Pay attention to signs of escalating aggression
Use leash safely – practice Practice emergency muzzles with a leash on your dog or on a stuffed dog after you’ve been shown by your volunteer leader.
