30 How high school students can be successful in online college courses
Faculty Perspective How high school students can be successful in online college courses

31 Example: Syllabus and Schedule
A course syllabus often gives significant information about what will be in the course. Syllabi often contain course calendars, or course calendars with due dates are provided as separate documents.

32 Example: News Section Many instructors make use of the News section on the opening Course Page to give hints or “heads up” about course activities. But students do not always read them. And there is no mechanism that tells us if students are reading (and comprehending the information.

33 Example: Getting Started
Our instructional design team has created a getting started model that is more pointed about core course information. But students still have to read it, and they still don’t have direct, real-time ways to ask questions. We do have numerous supports that range from contacting the teacher to our Solution Center, but the student has to “drive” her or his own learning more so than in face-to-face high school classroom.

34 Basic Course Design All online courses follow the same lesson design. Individual instructors “tweak” the design a little, but they all contain these base elements. Instructor Commentary is an area where instructors augment or provide additional explanation of content information in textbooks and other sources. This may take the form of written notes or video taped lecture or monologue.

35 Basic Course Design Aplia is one of several third party vendors that many courses use.

36 Third Party Vendors Examples of third party vendors used across UW Colleges Online courses.

37 Basic Course Design Discussion forums is a tool that instructors are using more and more to infuse a more social element into their classes in creative ways.

38 Discussions Research shows there can be significant benefits to taking college courses in high school.
