3 BBA vs. BSBA: What is the Difference?
Students take Quantitative Applications in Business (MAS 110) or Calculus 1 (MTH 161) and two statistics courses (MAS 201 and 202). To graduate with Honors in the Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), students must pursue Departmental Honors. Graduation requirements include an honors thesis and the minimum GPA of 3.9. BSBA Students take two levels of pure calculus (MTH 161 and 162) and two higher level statistics courses (MAS 311 and 312).  An “Introduction to Programming” course and a higher level quantitative course are also required in the BSBA Business Core. To graduate with General Business Honors, students must complete the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) with a minimum GPA of 3.75.

4 Which courses are typical for a first-semester freshman in Business?
A typical full-time academic schedule for a new Business School freshman would include 5 courses (15-17 credit hours): This is required of all full-time Business students in the first year. 1. BUS 101 – 3 credit hours Enroll in ENG 105 unless you have credit from AP/IB or dual enrollment, or if you have submitted a minimum SAT English score of 700 or a minimum ACT English score of 32. 2. ENG 105 – 3 credit hours An appropriate level math course will be determined by your choice of degree, an SAT/ACT math score, the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment score, and/or previous college credit in a math course. 3. MATH – 3 to 4 credit hours Select BSL 212, BUS 150, or MKT All are required core courses for all Business students. 4. FRESHMAN BUSINESS CORE COURSE – 3 credit hours Select one additional course of your choice (ECO 211,  ECO 212, another business core course, or a general education course based on your interests, academic background, and transcript). 5. CHOICE COURSE – 3 to 4 credit hours (If you are a Foote Fellow, Global Business Studies Scholar or if you intend to follow a pre-health track, and/or if you have college credits for English Composition and Calculus, your schedule will be slightly different.)

5 What do I do about AP/IB/CLEP Exams, A-Levels, Cambridge Pre-U, and CAPE credits or Dual Enrollment/Transfer Courses? AP/IB (HL)/CLEP exams: If you do not know the results of AP/IB (HL)/CLEP exams at this time, you will need to make a judgment about the potential for receiving credits. You may check the AP/IB (HL) score tables online in order to determine the exam scores necessary for the awarding of University of Miami credit for specific courses. A-Levels, Cambridge Pre-U, and CAPE: The University of Miami will only award credit once the official A-Level, AS-Level, CAPE or Cambridge Pre-U exam certificate has been issued. Check the policies online regarding the awarding of University credits. Dual Enrollment/Transfer credits: If you took a course for college credit, you must submit official transcripts to the UM Office of Admission from the issuing College or University before the end of your first semester. A listing on the high school transcript is not sufficient to award college credit.   A minimum grade of "C" is required for consideration of credit in all dual enrollment and transfer courses. Please refer to Undergraduate Admission, Transfer of Credits for more information.

6 Evaluation of AP/IB (HL) Scores for UM Credits
AP/IB (HL) scores: You must request that your scores be sent directly to the UM Office of Admission from the College Board or from your regional IB office. CLEP scores: You must submit an Official Test Result Report to the UM Office of Admission. DEADLINE: No credit will be awarded for AP/IB courses after December 7, 2017. Send all documents to: University of Miami Office of Admission P.O. Box Coral Gables, FL 33124

7 A-Level, Cambridge, Pre-U, and CAPE Unit Credit
The University of Miami will only award credit once the official A-Level, AS-Level, CAPE or Cambridge Pre-U exam certificate has been issued. Preliminary results, Statement of Results, and unofficial photocopies cannot be used to grant credit. Minimum passing grade of C is required for the AS-Level and A-Level. Minimum passing grade of III is required for the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE). Minimum passing grade of P1 is required for the Cambridge Pre-U. Once you have received your official A-Level, AS-Level, CAPE or Cambridge Pre-U exam certificate, submit the original exam certificate to the Office of Undergraduate Admission. Send all documents to: University of Miami Office of Admission P.O. Box Coral Gables, FL 33124

8 Dual Enrollment and Transfer Credits
If you took a course for college credit, you must submit official transcripts to the UM Office of Admission from the issuing College or University before the end of your first semester.  A listing on the high school transcript is not sufficient to award college credit.  A minimum grade of "C" is required for consideration of credit in all dual enrollment and transfer courses. Transcripts are reviewed on a course-by-course basis. Each UM School or College determines if transferable credits may apply toward satisfying degree requirements. All grades earned in transfer courses are part of your permanent record and are used to calculate the graduation GPA. DEADLINE: Transcripts should be submitted to UM no later than December 7, 2017. Send all documents to: University of Miami Office of Admission P.O. Box Coral Gables, FL 33124

9 General Education Areas of Knowledge: What is a Cognate?
The "Areas of Knowledge" aspect of the university's general education requirements is based on the notion of cognates.  A cognate is a group of at least three (3) related courses for at least 9 credits. The courses in a cognate are related in a topical, thematic, interdisciplinary, sequential, or other such fashion, so that completion of a cognate provides coherent depth of knowledge in the area. Students must complete at least one cognate in each of the following Areas of Knowledge (minimum of 9 courses): Arts & Humanities (A&H) People & Society (P&S) Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Your major in Business will fulfill either the People and Society cognate or the STEM cognate, depending on the major. Check the “Business” pages of the University Bulletin for more information. As a first-semester freshman, we recommend that you consider taking a course from one of the “Arts and Humanities” cognates, unless you plan to study abroad. Read more about Cognates .
