1 Complete the diagram column. Use the book, if needed.
Grab your focus lesson Complete the diagram column. Use the book, if needed.

2 Today’s Objective SWBAT distinguish between observations and inferences. SWBAT describe the characteristics which determine if something is living or non.

3 Were you absent? Check the calendar
How will we get there? Last class FCIM Basic Concepts: Examples Flavor Longevity Conclusion Review Step 7 Possible Errors/ How to improve Quiz 1: Scientific Method Track Quiz Remediation or Enrichment This class FCIM Basic Concepts: Diagram Mystery Bag Competition CAT vs TABLE Notes: Observation, Inference, Characteristics of Life White board practice I.P. Were you absent? Check the calendar

4 Setting up the top of page 6:
Mystery Bag: Observations Tactile Observations (Description) Unknown Object Leave yourself enough space in your data table to collect all of your observations Diagram of the object: Is your object ALIVE? Why or Why not? ________________________________

5 Mystery Bag: Top of Page 10
Each table is going to get their own mystery bag. When instructed, each table member will take turns reaching into the bag to feel their mystery object. NO PEEKING! THIS IS A TACTILE ONLY EXERCISE Record a list of adjectives describing what you feel into your data table. Infer: WHAT IS IT???? As a group decide if, based on this list, your object is living or non-living. Explain your reasoning in at least two sentences directly below your list. Engage: Depends on what engage you choose. After students see the demo, write down what they think they observed on the board. Then review which ones are observations and which ones are inferences. Have them fill in the rest of their table (Now I Know section) with the proper definition. It is important for students to understand this concept before going into the lab.

6 Cat Vs Table What do they have in common
Cat Vs Table What do they have in common? What makes them different… create a venn diagram on the bottom half of Page 10. You must have at least four points for each portion of the venn diagram.

7 Procedure Practice: Substitutes

8 Notes Page 11 Today you will use a handout to learn the topics of observation, inference and the characteristics of life. Often times sub work will either take the form of a handout, or a book reading. It is YOUR responsibility to learn the information assigned. Volume Level: 0 Read all directions, use high lighters. If you finish early make flash cards to study any newly introduced vocabulary.

9 Review, Rewrite and Remember!
All living things have 8 characteristics: Made up of cells Need Materials and Energy Respond to surroundings Grow and develop Has a universal genetic code Reproduction Maintain an Internal Balance As a group, living things change over time. EXPLAIN

10 White Board Practice Procedures:
Group practice is important. It builds confidence and prepares us for independent practice and assessment. Procedures: One person per table will come to the front to grab a white board, marker and eraser. Move quietly, quickly, and professionally We will only write the answers on the board.

11 Which characteristic of living things does this match?
IF NEEDED: Lower level visual questions to practice with newly introduced material…

12 Which characteristic of living things does this match?

13 Which characteristic of living things does this match?

14 Which characteristic of living things does this match?

15 Independent practice: Page 12-13
Silently and independently complete the handout for pages When you have finished, cut and paste your work in on the appropriate pages. Add your work to the Table of Contents. Reference the front board if necessary. Study the vocabulary you will be quizzed on next class.
