Characteristics of Waves Highlighting EL strategies using the 5E model in Physical Science

Engage Examine the cartoon in the Active Physics, It’s About Time book. –Record three observations and three opinions on the participant handout. Select evidence from the cartoon to support the formation of your opinion.

Engage Answer the “What Do You Think” question on your participant handout. –Your response should be 25 words or more. Pair–share your thoughts

Explore Based on the standards, what is the big concept you want students to grasp? –Science TEKS IPC 5a: The student knows the effects of waves on everyday life. The student is expected to demonstrate wave types and their characteristics through a variety of activities such as modeling with ropes and coils, activating tuning forks and interpreting data on seismic waves.

Explore Brainstorm: What are the “big ideas” presented in this lesson? –What are the different types of waves? –What are the different characteristics of waves? –How does speed effect wave characteristics?

Explore Using the materials provided spend 10 minutes completing steps 1–9. –Focus on data collection and the big ideas: What are the different types of waves? What are the different characteristics of waves? How does speed effect wave characteristics?

Explain Use the common lab experience to assign meaning to new scientific vocabulary. Working in groups, divide up the terms and complete the visual vocabulary chart.

Explain

Spend two minutes discussing the strength of the Visual Vocabulary Activity. –A knowledge of Latin roots allow students to decode the meaning of many scientific vocabulary terms. –Students who speak a Romance Language have an advantage in identifying these roots.

Extension Spend 3 minutes completing the sentence frames. How do these frames differ from others you have seen in the past? –Hypothetical Deductive Reasoning—If/Then format is a process common in the scientific method.

Evaluation Cut out the terms in the word bank at the bottom of the Graphic Vocabulary Assessment. –Match the terms to the graphic. Each term may only be used once. Identify the term that best describes the graphic. –Extension: Write a one sentence definition of the term.
