1 SCIENTIST DINNER PARTY

2 In your warm up section…
Describe the difference between the heliocentric and geocentric theories. What ideas did people use to prove their version of the theory was correct? (Example: If you believed in the geocentric theory, what would you argue to prove you were correct?)

3 Before Scientific After Scientific

4 Before Scientific Revolution
Very little was known about the human body and how it worked Very little was known about the world of microscopic life Air and angels are what cause objects to move Geocentric Theory Laws of motion are different for objects on earth than those in the heavens Experiments and studies were not used to solve problems Objects made of heavy elements fall to the Earth Planets travel in perfect circular orbits

5 After Scientific Revolution
Experiments gave humans a better understanding the human anatomy and circularity system Heliocentric Theory Laws of motion are universal An invisible force called gravity causes objects to fall to earth The Scientific Method helped scientists study and understand the world around them. An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force Invention of the microscope helped scientists study and understand organisms that could not be seen by eye

6 Dinner Party Play Page 33: Scientific Inventors
Today we will read a play about famous scientists of the Scientific Revolution. I will need 7 actors/actress to help read the play. As we listen to the play think about each character and how they contribute to the Scientific Revolution

7 Let’s Review Copernicus More than 1 solar system
1st to believe our system was heliocentric Challenged idea that humans and the earth were the center of the universe

8 Let’s Review Developed mathematical theory to prove C’s work
Kepler Developed mathematical theory to prove C’s work Orbits of planets elliptical Universe could be studied and explained – not just a mystery that only God knew

9 Let’s Review He PROVED what C said – earth revolves around sun
Galileo Developed telescope to make observations Noted Jupiter’s moons, Saturn’s rings He PROVED what C said – earth revolves around sun Church put him on trial and made him recant

10 Let’s Review Change from Greek method of making assumptions
Bacon Worked on scientific method Urged scientists to test and experiment their ideas Change from Greek method of making assumptions His method made scientist PROVE their work

11 Let’s Review Descartes
Only reason should be used in approaching science Led to objectivity in science – not emotion or religion

12 Let’s Review Newton Theory of gravity
His work pulled together scientists before him Mechanistic world view

13 Scientific Revolution Review Record the following terms on pages 34
Copernicus Kepler Galileo Newton Geocentric Theory Heliocentric Theory Geocentric Theory Gravity Bacon Van Leewenhoek Fahrenheit Scientific Revolution ** Study Before / After Chart **

14 Scientific Revolution Inventions
Log in to our classroom account and pull up the activity for today. View the videos in blendspace and answer the questions through google docs.

15 Exit Tix Which scientists created the theory of gravity? a. Galileo c. Copernicus b. Newton d. Bacon Who developed the telescope to make observations? b. Newton d. Bacon
