6. If anyone wants to donate computer headphones for use with the iPads we’d appreciate it
In 1st Grade fluency (speed/accuracy) and comprehension are very important!
Every day the students will be doing Read to Self, Read to Someone and Listen to Reading (using the iPads/computer). A generous grandmother paid for the class to have a Raz-Kids subscription. Students can access and listen to books, record themselves reading and take quizzes. They can access at home by visiting my classroom websites. Paper leveled books will also be sent home every Friday in a baggie beginning next week. Please have your child read it several times, ask them questions, and then return in the same bag on Thursdays for a new one. Students will progress through both.

7. Words Their Way A “word study” program
Helps students learn spelling patterns rather than just memorizing a list of words
Every 2 weeks your child will get a new set of “words” on cards
They keep one copy at school and take one copy home to use for practice
They manipulate the words by doing multiple “sorting” activities
The words on the test may/may not be the same ones they had so we can see if they really understand the spelling pattern

8. EngageNY
Covers Common Core math standards
Students will take home math pages they completed in class for you to look over
In first grade students will learn about addition/subtraction, geometry, time, graphing, measurement, fractions, and place value

9. Grading/Performance Levels
U – 50-59%
4 = Demonstrates above level proficiency independently
3 = Demonstrates grade level proficiency independently
2 = Demonstrates grade level proficiency with support
1 = Demonstrates below grade level proficiency with support

10. Classroom Assessments:
Reading Street Test (phonics, sight words, and reading comprehension)
Writing/Grammar/Conventions (Reading Street activity/writing sample)

11. Homework is given out every Monday and is due on Friday
It is collected but not counted for as a grade
Each night your child should do a page of homework, read10 to 20 minutes
They should also do a word sorting activity once a week
