2 Norms = Shared rules of conduct
I. Prescriptive norms What MUST be done II. Proscriptive norms What must NOT be done -HINT : “Pro” rhymes with “NO”

4 III. Mores (aka Customs)
Essential within a given society, deep moral significance Ex: Do not kill, fidelity within marriage, religious doctrines, etc.

Laws Many laws reflect the mores of a society and thus indicate its values and norms The formal methods used to enforce laws distinguish them from mores and folkways Sometimes laws create conflict between the demands of a free society and personal choice “Legislating morality” refers to using a society’s legal apparatus to influence conduct
