1 Ionic bonding Day #2

2 Learning goals We are learning to identify ionic compounds.
We are learning to name ionic compounds. We are learning to write chemical formulas for ionic compounds.

3 Recall An ionic bond occurs between a metal and a non-metal.
The metals lose electrons to become cations. The non-metals gain electrons to become anions. The resulting compound is held together electrostatically. The overall charge of an ionic compound is zero.

4 Example #1 Mg2+ O2- Ca2+ Cl- Na+ F- Mg2O2 CaCl2 MgO NaF
Determine the chemical formula for each compound below. a) Sodium Fluoride b) Magnesium Oxide c) Calcium Chloride Step #1: Write the ions Mg2+ O2- Ca2+ Cl- Na+ F- Step #2: Criss-Cross Charges Mg2O2 CaCl2 Step #3: Write the Formula & reduce (if necessary) MgO NaF

5 Try this Name the following ionic compounds: a) NaBr b) LiF c) MgBr2
d) AlI3 e) K2S f) AL2O3

6 Try this Use the criss-cross method to determine the chemical formula and name of the following: a) lithium and fluorine b) beryllium and fluorine c) magnesium and sulfur d) aluminum and oxygen e) hydrogen and phosphorus

7 Learning goals We are learning to identify ionic compounds.
We are learning to name ionic compounds. We are learning to write chemical formulas for ionic compounds.
