1 PBIS Faculty/staff Survey School Climate
Open Discussion

2 Q1- I am a/an ________ at Columbia High School.

3 Q2- Have you heard of positive behavior support team (PBST)?
Yes % No %

4 IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH CURRENT SCHOOL CLIMATE?

5 Q3- I feel that the adults at this school speak positively to children.
Comments: Some teachers bully the students only some do. There is a lot of redirection of negative behaviors throughout the school I see some negative

6 Q4- The students of Columbia are motivated by positive recognition from adults.
Comments: Not all.

7 Many do not seem to care about expectations
Q5- Columbia's students know what behavior is expected throughout the school. Comments: Many do not seem to care about expectations

8 Q6- I have seen a positive change in school climate with the implementation of the new HCS discipline plan. Comments unknown I wasn't here last year, I have been in some rough schools in the past, but I do not see how these policies are going to help the students. I think it is hurting the good students. I also think that it helps creater an abusive environment for the teachers. I am parent of a student in HSV City Schools, and I am currently planning on moving my child out of the district for the next school year. I see administration working hard. Students know that they can misbehave and be disrespectful without consequences. I'm new so I wouldn't know Answer Choices Responses Agree 20% (8) Somewhat Agree 32.5% (13) Disagree 47.5% (19) Total (40)

9 Q7-Some challenges I have faced with the new HCS discipline plan are:
Teachers scared to write up students. Ideas for discipline after school due to bus riders. Students have a lot of chances to get in trouble before an actual consequence is given. Having a hard time with students not caring when they get the 3 write ups on the disipline documentation form. Military Ready. Nothing that I can't handle. Students are more likely to misbehave because they know nothing is going to happen to them. Dealing with students who have no interest in following the rules regardless of what positive recognition is applied. Cellphones Foul Language Students in halls at inappropriate times Inability to remove students who are disrupting everyone else's learning. the documentation Phones are a huge issue. Every day is a constant battle. Students sometimes disregard direction from teachers due to minimal consequences Some students are very rude and disrespectful. They do not follow schools rules and regulations. There are not effective consequences for severe and habitual behaviors. I do think that we are trying some positive things such as pep rallies but I see students who should not be at the pep rally because of ongoing negative behaviors. students abuse of how many times they can misbehavior prior to actual punishment taken on disciplinary referral *Cell Phones *Dress Code Students feel at liberty to express themselves however they please regardless of the teachers approach.

10 Q7- Continued Teachers just aren't writing people up, because nothing happens to the students that are written up. This is not helping our kids. It is hindering our kids. It will not help prepare them for the real world. I have become frustrated with not knowing when I can write up a student when the infraction seems to need immediate response. Having to document everything Keeping track of all the paperwork I feel students know they have several chance before to misbehave before they will go to inhouse or out oss. Too many chances for students to participate in bad behavior; students know they have 3 chances to commit behavior Cannot take action until three Class 1 offenses have happened. They may not remember the 1st or 2nd offense before disciplinary action is taken, so it may not be as effective. Students ask to use the restroom and told no. They walk out of class anyway because they know they only have to sign the Columbia behavior phone and get a phone call home. When the parent is called, they side with the student because they feel that 5 minutes isn't enough time to use the restroom and it's unfair to not let them out to use the restroom at will.

11 Q-7 Continued I have become frustrated with not knowing when I can write up a student when the infraction seems to need immediate response. Having to document everything Keeping track of all the paperwork I feel students know they have several chance before to misbehave before they will go to inhouse or out oss. students not understanding what behavior does not increase their learning Students don't respect it and the problem children disrupt class for all the others for too long before they can have any type of consequence. Students know they can't get in trouble/no discipline....

12 Q8-I would like for the Columbia PBS team to know:
16 Responses I'd love to do some kind of random recognition of kids doing the right thing each month or so where they get some kind of a prize and we can nominate them. that we need small group training on how to teach with love in our hearts but without being taken advantage of by the students N/A The staff is aware of the new PBP. PBS needs to have positive as well as negative consequences. We need other negative consequences besides ISS and OSS. We also need consistency across the all settings and with all personnel. More support needed to teachers regarding student behavior That everyone must be onboard to make the plan effective. Consistency by the administrative team is imperative and they must stop catering to the students when they are not following directives or meeting expectations. I am confused a little bit. I do call home when a student is doing well academically, and behavior wise. that I am already doing PBS strategies in my classroom That WE are one team and we are here for each other The students are generally respectful but will not follow the simplest of rules. Consistency is key! How can we reward students for positive behavior? How we can deal with hallways during lunch period. I will support the plan. I need training on how to train the students on more of a positive behavior.

13 Teacher perception of the solution…

14 More surveys coming soon 
IS PBIS THE “SOLUTION”? More surveys coming soon  PBIS training coming soon… Teacher perception of the solution… Teacher and staff surveys: Is it your responsibility to create a positive learning environment? Is it your responsibility to teach social behaviors? Staff meetings: Formal and informal Difficult to know if PBIS is the solution unless you understand what it is…

15 Q9- I am willing to help implement a positive behavior plan that rewards students for good behavior.
Yes % (42) No 2.33% ( 1 )
