3 Social Development Attachment : the emotional connections that form between people Do we become attached just because we need to be fed? Harry Harlow: monkey experiments Attachment comes from a need for contact comfort: the feeling of having physical contact with someone/something that is warm and soft and causes a feeling of well being Monkeys who experienced the cloth “mother” felt secure in exploring their surrounding knowing they had a “ comforting and secure” base to return to

4 Mary Ainsworth: Noticed that children at first wanted to be held by just anyone but by 4 mos begin to prefer the primary caregiver (mother) About 4-8 months begin to exhibit stranger anxiety: fear of strangers and separation anxiety: distress when the primary caregiver leaves

Secure: results when child feels that parent is reliable and will be there when needed Insecure: results when children feel that caregivers are unresponsive or unreliable in meeting their needs Ambivalent: child was not concerned with caregiver’s absence Avoidant: child fussed even when caregiver returned

6 How does attachment style impact personality?
Securely attached children: Take more risks Explores their environment more More cooperative; friendly Less likely to display behavior problems More likely to do well in school Insecurely attached children Less willing to take risks or explore their environments (wants the sure thing) May be loners; unable to form friendships May display behavior problems

7 What are the types of parenting styles?
Warm v. cold: Warm parents are physically affectionate, engaged with children Cold parents are less affectionate and may seem distant Strict v. permissive: Strict parents set boundaries, rules may be both positive and negative Permissive parents have few rules, allowing children the “freedom” to make decisions With a partner, discuss how having a strict parent can be both positive and negative.

8 Children of authoritative parents:
Parents can display combinations of being warm/strict (authoritative), cold/permissive, cold/strict (authoritarian), warm/permissive Children of authoritative parents: Independent Achievement oriented Positive sense of self Children of authoritarian parents: Resistant or dependent of others Less spontaneous Do not do as well in school
