Lived from 551BCE-479BCE, known as Kung Fu-Tzu According to legend, Confucius aspired to advise several rulers, but was unsuccessful and became a teacher and moral exemplar Lived during the warring states period– period in Chinese history during which several states fought for control over what is now China After his death, his teachings were spread by others Mencius

3 What Did Confucius Believe?
Intro Confucianism is rooted in the belief that familial relationships are the foundation for society. The basis of the relationship between children and their parents is concept of filial piety Children should demonstrate devotion and dedication to their parents in both thought and action– beginning in childhood and continuing throughout adulthood Interactions within a family based on proper conventions and rituals (li) serves more than just creating harmony within the family. Strong emphasis placed on the teaching children proper behavior to prepare them for life in a society that is based on hierarchy. Respect and education

Education Confucius's teachings center on the importance of education in the formation of a person’s character. Education is the most important part in the development of just leaders Those shaped by education that stressed moral behavior and those mentored by benevolent individuals would be best suited to rule

Five Key Relationships: Obedience and respect for superiors; elder family members, ancestors, or leaders Correct behavior within relationships was necessary for ensuring harmonious interactions Superior Subordinate Ruler Ruled Husband Wife Parent Child Elder brother Younger brother Friend

6 What Role Does Confucianism Play Today?
Confucius is one of the world’s most influential philosophers Confucianism continues to influence large groups of people around the world China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam Real life examples: The way children and teens defer to their elders and parents (filial piety) The hierarchical structure within offices among employees of different ages and levels of experience Expectations people place upon their government and its legitimacy

7 Important Texts The ideas of Confucius may be found in the Analects of Confucius. While not written by Confucius himself, the book is considered to be the foundation of Confucianism
