During the late 1800s and early 1900s, some people in Texas and around the United States wanted economic, political, and social reforms. Progressives, wanted to balance tradition and progress- preserve what they liked about the old, adjust to new realities, and protect themselves from what they considered the worst features of big business and modern America. This period of time is known as the PROGRESSIVE ERA.

A social reform movement based on improving society through the power of the government. Who participated? Urban Texans Governor James E. Ferguson Goals: To spend tax revenues on public programs. To improve the economy. To reduce waste and corruption. To protect Texas laborers.

4 Progressive Movement in Texas
Much of the Progressive Era was about reacting to problems caused by industrialization. As industry grew, people moved to cities to worked in factories and there was more poverty, crime and disease.
