Capitalization and Punctuation of Titles Shorter Works- Shorter Works- Poems, chapters, short stories, articles, song titles The first and all important works are capitalized – Ex: My Friend has a Dog Use quotation marks. A period or a comma after the title is placed in the quotation marks. Any other punctuation following the title is placed outside the quotation marks. - Ex: I read the story, My Friend has a Dog. -Ex: The story, My Friend has a Dog, is about Larrys new dog.
