3 Civilization Discovered and Named
1954- A British archaeologist looked around central Nigeria in search for artifacts Came upon over 200 terracotta artifacts through purchase and his own excavations Artifacts were just outside a present-day village called Nok, which the civ. is named after Possibly 1st complex civilization in West Africa

4 People First West African people known to smelt iron
Made tools for farming and weapons for hunting Tools were also produced for trade

5 Art Sculptures made of terracotta, a reddish-brown baked clay
Depicting animals as well as people Nok figures’ distinguishing characteristics: Elongated face with flaring nostrils and protruding lips The artifacts are sometimes positioned with head or chin on their knees
