Americans protested, so Spain ceded Florida in return for America giving up claims to Spanish territory in the southwest

13. Texas Annexation
Mexico won independence from Spain and controlled present day AZ, CA, NV, NM, TX, and UT
Mexico agreed to allow American settlers to come to their land and settle because at this time the Mexican were outnumbered by the Indians
Problems broke out between American settlers and Mexicans, so Texas declared its independence

14. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo - 1848
Mexico agreed to give up any claim of Texas and declared that the Texas border ended at the Rio Grande
Mexico also gave up CA, NV, UT, and parts of OK, WY, CO, KS, NM, AR

15. Gadsden Purchase
Mexico sold southern New Mexico and Arizona for $10 million.
Provided a route for the southern transcontinental railroad

Settlers wanted to travel to area to live and spread Christianity to Indians; British land
Fighting broke out.
